Countdown Clocks May Be Coming to A Station Near You

The MTA is now testing countdown clocks at various stations around the boroughs. The new countdown clocks were recently unveiled at the 145th Street Station on the ABCD line.

Commuters heading south from the station in Harlem are told how many stations away the next train is by an automated voice through the station’s speaker system. The clocks also tell you how many minutes away the next train is.

The riders we spoke with said the clocks would be nice if they actually worked. Most straphangers agreed that it’s a nice touch but they griped that the clocks are a bit off.

The countdown clocks at the 145th Street Station join 24 clocks already in place along the L line. The MTA says that they plan to have 100 clocks operating in 2010 and that all stations on numbered lines will have the new countdown clocks by the end of 2011.

Take a look at this video to see what straphangers at the 145th Street Station had to say about the new clocks.

A few weekends ago I was in Manhattan waiting for the L and when it arrived, the sign said it was 2 minutes away. I love the signs in D.C., but what’s the point in NY if they don’t work?
