Public Advocate: No Card Cuts, Maybe Bridge Tolls

StreesBlog has posted a comment from NYC Public Advocate Bill de Blasio regarding the MTA’s proposed cut to student Metrocards. de Blasio, like so many other politicians, is asking the MTA not to cut services. But StreetsBlog wanted to know how, exactly, he thought the agency should make up the difference in their budget gap.

…We should look at other options such as stimulus funding, weight based registration fees or reviving Speaker Silver’s proposal to impose bridge tolls that are tied to the cost of subway fares. But over the long term the MTA must be more accountable and responsible with managing its budget.

The article mentions de Blasio’s vote against congestion pricing, another money-making idea that’s resurfaced recently.

Watch the Manhattan Bridge Boogie as Trains Transit

This well-watched youtube video shows the undue undulation of the Manhattan bridge in response to subway traffic.  Thank god that suspension bridges are built to move like this.
